"Hi Mum" scam message: a made-up example
A message arrives from an unknown number: "Hi Mum, this is my new number". It is usually followed by a request to pay an urgent bill. The message below is made up to show the warning signs.
Example, made up
Hi Mum, it's me. I dropped my phone and this is my new number, save it. Can you do me a favour? I need to pay a bill today and my banking app isn't working. Can you transfer £480 and I'll pay you back tomorrow? Don't tell Dad yet, I'll explain later x
The red flags
- A "new number" from someone who says they are family, with no name used.
- A request for money, often to an account in someone else's name.
- "Don't tell Dad" stops you from checking with anyone else.
- A reason why they can't talk or use their own bank.
What to do
- Call your child on the number you already have, or ask a question only they would know.
- Don't send money until you have spoken to them.
