Scam message examples, explained
These messages are made up, but they copy tricks criminals use every day. Each page shows the message, marks the warning signs and says what to do. Reading a few makes the same tricks easier to spot in your own messages.
Fake CTT parcel text: a made-up example
A "held parcel" text asking for a small customs fee.
MB WAY scam messages: made-up examples
Fake MB WAY alerts and "buyers" who send you to a cash machine.
"Hi Mum" scam message: a made-up example
A "new number" from a family member who needs money today.
Signs that show up again and again
- A deadline or a threat: "today", "within 24 hours", "your account will be blocked".
- A link that is not the company's own website, or a shortened link.
- A request for a code, PIN or password. Banks and shops don't ask for these by message.
- Money by an unusual route: gift cards, crypto, a "new account", or a transfer for a relative on a new number.
